Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is Back!

With ancient Chinese instruments leading a grand Western orchestra, Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is once again set to appear at select concert halls across North America.
This fall, witness original Shen Yun compositions and select Western classics take center stage at revered venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center.
The Shen Yun Orchestra has always been an integral component of Shen Yun performances. But for years audiences could only experience Shen Yun music as accompaniment to dance performances. The Symphony Orchestra now brings Shen Yun’s musicians and original compositions directly to the audience from the stage with a full symphony orchestra comprised of over 90 musicians. This music has never been grander!
Traditional Chinese music emphasizes the expression of inner feelings—the ancients always used musical instruments to relate their states of mind. Western music, meanwhile, focuses on the overall effect of the musical ensemble—and to achieve that, arrangement and harmony are of utmost importance. Shen Yun’s music combines these approaches to capture the essence of both East and West.
The Symphony further utilizes the power and precision of a Western orchestra to accentuate ancient Chinese instruments, such as the two-stringed erhu and the plucked pipa. This seamless integration represents a breakthrough in classical music.
Drawing on five millennia of Chinese culture, Shen Yun’s repertoire of original works captures the spiritual essence of the Middle Kingdom, ranging from grand imperial music to rich folk tunes.
The orchestra will also pay tribute to Western classical music by performing celebrated works from Berlioz and Dvořák. In addition, the performance features Chinese vocalists who are distinguished by using the traditional bel canto singing technique to perform Chinese texts.
